In July this year, Murray and I embarked on an unforgettable expedition cruise to the Kimberley region of Australia. We were joined by a small group of family, friends, and clients. The experience was remarkable, allowing us to explore the stunning landscapes and connect with the 254 guests on board. Expedition cruising is unique. With small ships, zodiac excursions, and engaging talks from a passionate expedition team, you mingle more than you would on a traditional cruise. In contrast, Mediterranean cruises often see guests going ashore for individual activities.
The Allure of the Kimberley

The Kimberley has gained immense popularity, and more ships are beginning to operate in the area. My advice? Go soon before it becomes too crowded! This destination appeals to those seeking soft adventure close to home. The Kimberley stretches between Darwin and Broome in Northwestern Australia. It is remote and challenging to access. While some four-wheel-drive tours exist, the best way to explore is by sea. Many of the region's top attractions are only reachable by boat.
A Morning to Remember

The first morning at sea is always thrilling. Pulling open the curtains, you anticipate the day ahead. I woke up early to witness a spectacular sunrise. The soft light created a beautiful glow over the water, which was unusually calm. My camera was busy capturing the stunning landscapes throughout the day.

A typical day on the cruise involved heading ashore or embarking on a zodiac excursion after breakfast. After lunch, we would engage in another activity. Afternoon lectures provided insights into the region, and we reviewed the day's adventures while previewing what was planned for tomorrow. The expedition team was exceptional. Many members specialized in various fields and possessed extensive knowledge about the region. We even reconnected with a guide we met in the Ross Sea, whose passion for crocodiles was evident. While he had little to share about them in Antarctica, he thrived in the Kimberley!

Wildlife Encounters
We spotted numerous crocodiles along the banks of the rivers and inlets we visited. Some swam gracefully in the water, including a giant saltwater crocodile that was as long as our zodiac! Our guide's excitement was contagious. Having a team of specialists on board who are genuinely enthusiastic about their subjects enhances the experience. Sometimes, they are even more thrilled than the guests, as they appreciate the rarity of certain sightings.
In addition to crocodiles, we encountered turtles, sharks, and a variety of birdlife. The geology of the area is fascinating, with indigenous rock art dating back up to 30,000 years. Out of respect for the indigenous people, we were asked not to take photos. However, I assure you, the artwork is incredible and remarkably clear, telling stories of ancient lives.

Geological Wonders
The rocks in this region are ancient, predating life on Earth. The formations are breathtaking, changing colors with the light throughout the day. They glow in shades of gold and rich red, creating a mesmerizing landscape.
We made a technical stop outside Australian waters to visit Ashmore Reef. The clarity of the water and the vibrant marine life were astounding. Unfortunately, no landings were permitted.

The tides in this area are incredibly strong, rising and falling several meters. This phenomenon creates the Horizontal Waterfalls at sea, where the waters rush in and out with the tides. We enjoyed a zodiac exploration of Montgomery Reef, where water cascades off the reef, forming rapids as the tide falls. It creates the illusion of a vast reef rising from the water.

Onboard Experience
We traveled aboard Le Jacques Cartier, a Ponant French small expedition ship. Announcements were primarily in English, although some parts of the world may feature both French and English. Most guests on board were Australians and New Zealanders, with a few from other nationalities. The dining experience was delightful, featuring a French-inspired menu alongside Australian dishes, complemented by local and international wines. This expedition was fully inclusive, with the only additional costs being for premium wines, spa treatments, and boutique purchases.

If you're seeking a soft expedition close to home, I highly recommend this cruise. It offers excitement and interest without pushing most people out of their comfort zones. The sights are wonderful, and the days are filled with fun activities. The best time to visit the Kimberley is from June to August, providing a pleasant escape from the cooler temperatures of New Zealand.

The Kimberley is truly one of the world's great expedition destinations—close to home yet unlike anywhere else. If you’d like to experience it for yourself, I’d love to help make it happen.

This was the most enjoyable and informative cruise I have been on. It could not be faulted for interest and excitment. The extensive knowledge of the group of scientists and tour guides seemed limitless. Could not have been more delighted.
